5 out of 5 stars An outstanding New Zealand film...   June 19, 2001

This film is one of the best Kiwi films I've ever seen. It is an action packed movie about a stolen yellow mini traveling the length of New Zealand. The story is well thought out, and it dispalys some of the most beautiful New Zealand country side. The car chases are realistic, and put the yanks with their efforts to shame.

5 out of 5 stars A totally mad New Zealand film   April 8, 2001

A classic film following the yellow Mini driven by the "Blondini Gang" to Invercargill on the southern tip of New Zealand. Hilariously funny and well worth watching. Some great car chases that easily outclass the rubbish you find on American films. I have never yet met a New Zealander that does not know of this film. It took me 18 years to find this on video after the first time I saw the film on TV in the mid 1980's and it was well worth the wait !

Briefly, this film is a story is of a Mini being driven across NZ andhaving bits sold off it. I will concentrate on the DVD release in myreview.
The DVD itself has a couple of shortcomings. The first is a lack of anysubtitles and the second is that the soundtrack listed on the back asbeing in stereo is a mono soundtrack, which has been processed to give apseudo-stereo effect, which makes it sound strange.
Listen to the end of the car hire office scene where the Mini leaves thecar hire showroom and drives off. Rather than a smooth stereo pan fromside to side, the sound is squeezed into one channel and then pannedacross to the other side to give the effect of a passing car. It justdoesn't work and I for one would prefer the original mono soundtrack. Themusic is in mono as well, a bit odd when the master tapes were recorded instereo.
However, it seems to have had extra bits added to it, such as extendedscenes. The scene where Gerry is being sick over a fence, the VHS versioncuts straight to this, but the DVD has extra footage in between this andthe previous scene, making the film longer. The 'extras' are non-existentreally, but remember this film was made on a tight budget.
The print itself is in good condition, the VHS film had very slight weakcolour in places.
I would still give it the full 5 stars due to the low 5.99 asking price.

1 out of 5 stars highly disappointing   February 28, 2006

After reading other spectator reviews, I was convinced it would be well worth watching, as action, adventure and impressive scenery as well as a good plot seemed to offer a positive and promising result. Alas ! I was really disappointed, as were my sons, who were waiting in hopeful expectation for this so called masterpiece. The script and dialogue was weak, and there were a lot of sleazy details. Not that I´m a prude, but there were many tasteless scenes which did nothing but debase the plot. All in all, a load of rubbish and extremely disappointing and I wouldn´t rush out to buy it. In fact, after seeing it once, anyone is welcome for my copy, which I´m quite happy to get rid of.

I first watched this on TV around 1987. Loved them selling bits off the Mini and having to push start it!

Note this will be available in the UK on Region 0 DVD from 5th April 2004!
