Amazon.co.uk Review The eponymous hero of Joe Dirt is full of "uncomplicated goodness", which is a polite way of saying he's your archetypal dim bulb trailer trash. Sporting a mullet that makes him look like a chipmunk Billy Rae Cyrus, Dirt loves Lynyrd Skynyrd, greaser burgers, Auto Trader magazine and tying fireworks to cows. He is, as LA shock DJ Zander Kelly declares, "an underachievement nexus". Nonetheless, Dirt's quest to find the parents that abandoned him when he was eight years old captures the heart of Kelly's listeners and the hapless Dirt is cheered on as his stumbles from mishap to embarrassment. Cue an endearing but not entirely successful blend of fart gags and feelgood sentimentality. Saturday Night Live comedian David Spade captures the drawling dumbness of Dirt perfectly and Kid Rock puts in a star turn as Dirt's rival for the heart of Brandy (Brittany Daniel), but there's little here that hasn't been seen before. Dirt gets covered in "poop", Dirt is nearly eaten by a crocodile, Dirt becomes an unlikely hero of the people. With a sharper script and a slightly more adventurous bent, this could have been a 21st century Wayne's World. As it is, file under "bad hair, dude". On the DVD: As well as the usual array of outtakes, bloopers and deleted scenes, there are telling commentaries from both director Dennie Gordon and star David Spade. The latter is particularly revealing as it consists mainly of Spade saying "well, this scene used to be funny, but we had to cut this bit to get the PG-13 rating". A basic filmography for each of the main actors and the theatrical trailer rounds off the package. --Ian Watson

Sweet home Alabama... July 20, 2002 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Like with "Waterboy", starring Adam Sandler, you can't help but soon fall in love with the underachieving hero of this charming tale, Joe Dirt. Dave Spade shows his acting talent, when the expected "dumb-movie only" surprisingly turns out to be a cleverly done white trash outsider's vision quest for finding "his" home in the world, along love and true friendship. The film is hilariously funny, and though we get treated to our share of well executed fart- and poo-jokes, it even is sometimes subtly and wittily so. It's these quieter tones that let me grow fond of Joe and his saga, which portrays dreams and longings everyone shares: who doesn't wish to find her/his "Tokyo rose of the trailer park"? Speaking of that, Brittany Daniel is adorable in this picture. Great cast in general: Adam Beach, Christopher Walken, Clark Blake, Kid Rock (quite good comedy presence) to name a few. It would be a shame not to mention the excellent Rock soundtrack. A lot of extras are on this DVD, director Dennie Gordon's commentary was very worthwhile, while Spade's seems a bit "well, I sit down and improvise, but it's not my best day". Deleted scenes, again with Gordon's words (optional) are fun to watch, the somewhat short but interesting pack of outtakes complete this DVD. 87 minutes of my life well spent.

This is one hell of a funny ride. Throughout the movie you will be subject to massive fits of hilarity. Certainly a movie you can watch again & again. It has all the signs of an Adam Sandler classic with a Forest Gump twist. If you don't find this Movie funny or even hilarious you need to go get youself a sence of humour. A must for any Sandler fan.
HILARIOUS... July 31, 2005 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This film is just hilarious.... if you like Ben Stiller movies, or Adam Sandler I think you will appreciate this. The film takes you on a journey with Joe Dirt, this almost pathetic but endearing character who goes on a mission to find his parents who he lost when he was a child. If you are into a sophisticated humour, this is not the film for you but I think it was hilarious. Despite the lack of plot, and 2D characters.

Joe Dirt is a comedy classic. It comes from the hands of the American Saturday Night Live crew and the laughter is relentless. The movie has a good amusing story line and is packed with humour. Just remember, Lifes a garden, dig it!!
