Amazon.co.uk Review You know you're going to get a different kind of superhero when you cast Robert Downey Jr. in the lead role. And Iron Man is different, in welcome ways. Cleverly updated from Marvel Comics' longstanding series, Iron Man puts billionaire industrialist Tony Stark (that's Downey) in the path of some Middle Eastern terrorists; in a brilliantly paced section, Stark invents an indestructible suit that allows him to escape. If the rest of the movie never quite hits that precise rhythm again, it nevertheless offers plenty of pleasure, as the renewed Stark swears off his past as a weapons manufacturer, develops his new Iron Man suit, and puzzles both his business partner (Jeff Bridges in great form) and executive assistant (Gwyneth Paltrow). Director Jon Favreau geeks out in fun ways with the hardware, but never lets it overpower the movie, and there's always a goofy one-liner or a slapstick pratfall around to break the tension. As for Downey, he doesn't get to jitterbug around too much in his improv way, but he brings enough of his unpredictable personality to keep the thing fresh. And listen up, hardcore Marvel mavens: even if you know the Stan Lee cameo is coming, you won't be able to guess it until it's on the screen. It all builds to a splendid final scene, with a concluding line delivery by Downey that just feels absolutely right. --Robert Horton

Sit back. Disengage. Enjoy. September 25, 2008 R. Britain (Thailand) 20 out of 24 found this review helpful
I was never a big fan of superheroes to be honest. However I watched this movie prepared for a simple comic book epic, which would of course entail big explosions, great effects, a modest story line and hopefully some not too wooden acting. Thats exactly what you get, all done just about to perfection. You get nothing more, but the finish of it all is so good that you can have no complaints at all. If you expect more then don't watch it. Bonuses come in the form of a great lead man in Robert Downey Jr and the additional sparkle of Paltrow. The story is the generic Superhero plot followed in almost all the recent incarnations: superhero metamorphosis followed by a secondary character harnessing the ability to do the same with a bit extra followed by climactic battle with predictable ending. Its tried and tested and it works well. And this version of it is no exception. Its not deep, its not convoluted, its blockbuster entertainment in its cleanest purest form, for all with the appropriate level of expectation to appreciate. Sit back. Disengage. Enjoy.
The man in the techno mask. August 17, 2008 I. Goldsmith (England) 16 out of 22 found this review helpful
It's reasonably clean family viewing if you're into super heroes and big boy's toys. Well I liked it! It's worth watching just to see the suit being fitted to Tony Stark (Rob Downey jr). Iron man is pretty 2d character in the comics (in my opinion), but thanks to the marvels of CGI the best thing about him - his suit - is brought marvelously to life. Add to that some good performances from Downey and Co, plus a half decent plot and you get a pretty good movie. I saw this at the cinema and loved it! I saw The Dark Knight on the other hand and was disappointed. This is comic book escapism and good clean fun (if memory serves me right) and stands comfortably besides Spiderman and the newer Superman movie. In short, I recommend it!
Great film September 12, 2008 C. Shepherd (Humber Delta, UK) 10 out of 14 found this review helpful
I was a fan of the Iron Man comic books in the 1960's (wish I still had them) but had since grown up! When I saw that a film had been made, I just had to see it and wasn't disappointed. Downey is very believable as Tony Stark & the action scenes are fantastic. Great film, I look forward to Iron Man 2 (and hopefully 3 & 4!!). The DVD release is on my wish list already.
Unexpectedly good! August 15, 2008 benmully 6 out of 11 found this review helpful
Well I wasn't sure what to expect from this film, as bit of an unknown Marvel character to me, and also had Downey Jnr. in it. However the film was action packed, had a good story and was very enjoyable! The only few things that dragged were the multiple suit building montages (there were 3!), and having to look at Gwyneth "Wooden" Paltrow.
A good film or a god mix of special effects and computer graphics ? October 13, 2008 Empe (Italy) 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
Iron Man is a b-level superhero and this film is in line with the character. Very amazing scenes of GC and special effects, but the plot is poor (if non ridicolous) the cast is good, with Downey perfect for the role, but Paltrow and Bridges almost wasted. If you like superhero movies is better than Hulk (2003 ed) and F4 (one or two). But the film lacks of the complexity of Spiderman trilogy or the last Batmans. A good film for teen ??
