5 out of 5 stars Bloody fantastic!   June 29, 2008

This was an absolutely brilliant experience. I'm not a big fan of japanese animation, but I must say, it was a good addition to setting the mood for the atmosphere set by the writers.

After some of the poor attempts such as "the batman" series, this DVD brought Batman animation back to high standards. I would rate this as being as good as the Batman TAS. Watching this made me proud of being a big fan of the dark knight and gives me hope that "The Dark Knight" movie will be nothing short of spectacular.

Keep up the good work DC, this is the way Batman is meant to be!

Considering Kevin Conroy (the guy whose voice was used as the original batman in the animated series) was present in this DVD I thought it would be best to at least check it out.
Whilst I'm not a fan on the Japanese styling of batman, in the sense that they all seem to make their own version of batman, instead of tweaking or using the original batman from the animated series. Kinda like how George Clooney was the batman, yes he dressed and "acted" like batman, but we could all clearly see it was George Clooney in tights!
The animation and music for some of the short clips were great, and you can tell that the budget is big for the direct to DVD.
I'm a big fan of Batman TAS, and whilst I liked some of the stuff and directions in this DVD I didn't like the characters. Out of the six clips I only liked 2. Most of them were comparable to Transformers (the Japanese one done for 5 year olds). The characters looked like punk kids!
Something to watch, but don't think it's worth more than 5!

5 out of 5 stars Great Batman action   July 14, 2008

As a big fan of both Batman and Japanese animation I have been looking forward to this DVD for awhile now and thankfully it more than lived up to my expectations. The film consists of six interlocking stories that see Batman face off against both regular gangsters as well as villains from his rouges gallery such as Scarecrow, Killer Croc and Deadshot.

Each of the stories is directed and animated by different people and in slightly different styles which could be somewhat disconcerting to some but they all still fit within the overall Batman style. However, out of the six chapters I feel it is the first that leaves the most to be desired, animation wise, but other than that the animation is very good. The voice acting is also somewhat off in a couple of the chapters but is generally respectable.

This DVD has been compared to the Animatrix shorts that accompanied the Matrix trilogy in that it fits in between the Batman Begins and The Dark Knight and while I am not sure how much of the action here will make it into the Batman films, I do feel that any and all is good enough to be used. Any Batman fan should consider this a must watch and it would also be of interest to fans of anime as well.

3 out of 5 stars Dark...but not enough   July 24, 2008

Mildly effective styling of Batman works only sporadically because although the six stories are "interlocking"(a stretch in my eyes),the animation style is different in each segment and the lack of continuity is more self indulgent and gimmicky than it needs to be.
Segments themselves are variable in substance with "In Darkness Dwells" and "Deadshot" both head and shoulders above the rest.Darkness is simply brilliant.
A series of vignettes more than a "film" and as such does not bare comparison to the almost dated but superior "Mask Of The Phantasm".
Sophisticated in style but patchy in content.

2 out of 5 stars Could of been so much better   July 21, 2008

When I read the details of this DVD, I was under the impression that the 6 (so-called) interlocking stories would give a feeling of transition between BB and DK. However this is not on par with that done for the Matrix and does not, unless I've missed something, given any real hints as to how this story arc fits with DK.

We have gang-warfare and a little back-story on Bruce's training, but very little else. There's an episode that shows Scarecrow, but I doubt that his character will be given any screentime in DK, and no mention of the Joker, even though he's mentioned at the end of BB.

It's worth watching, but not buying.
