Amazon.co.uk Review You know you're going to get a different kind of superhero when you cast Robert Downey Jr. in the lead role. And Iron Man is different, in welcome ways. Cleverly updated from Marvel Comics' longstanding series, Iron Man puts billionaire industrialist Tony Stark (that's Downey) in the path of some Middle Eastern terrorists; in a brilliantly paced section, Stark invents an indestructible suit that allows him to escape. If the rest of the movie never quite hits that precise rhythm again, it nevertheless offers plenty of pleasure, as the renewed Stark swears off his past as a weapons manufacturer, develops his new Iron Man suit, and puzzles both his business partner (Jeff Bridges in great form) and executive assistant (Gwyneth Paltrow). Director Jon Favreau geeks out in fun ways with the hardware, but never lets it overpower the movie, and there's always a goofy one-liner or a slapstick pratfall around to break the tension. As for Downey, he doesn't get to jitterbug around too much in his improv way, but he brings enough of his unpredictable personality to keep the thing fresh. And listen up, hardcore Marvel mavens: even if you know the Stan Lee cameo is coming, you won't be able to guess it until it's on the screen. It all builds to a splendid final scene, with a concluding line delivery by Downey that just feels absolutely right. --Robert Horton

Smart, sassy, action-packed superhero romp. Finally! June 22, 2008 Hooligween (Kernow, Great Britain) 15 out of 18 found this review helpful
This is the kind of superhero movie we've been waiting for. It's a top-notch combination of excellent action scenes, wiseguy one-liners, cool (and credible) special effects all wrapped up with a half decent plot and some snappy direction. Finally! It was some kind of genius to cast Robert Downey Jr as the 'heart of stone' weapons designer who gets kidnapped in the Middle East and discovers a conscience as well as the concept of the Iron Man suit. Downey is brilliant in the role. He's pepped up, a smart-ass multi-millionaire who gets the pick of the witty one-liners. He's really well supported by his female assistant (Gwyneth Paltrow) who also gets to deliver some finely-honed put-downs which keep him vaguely rooted in reality. Best of all -- Jeff Bridges, playing a character with considerably more edge than The Dude normally exudes. The direction is tight and the action is delivered with pace and polish. The actual Iron Man suit itself is WAY COOL, looking something like a Mack Truck on legs. And while the idea (if you examine it in the cold light of day) might seem a little implausible, Downey has more than enough charisma to make it all seem perfectly plausible. Best of all, although this is the first movie so we have to go through the routine 'secret origin story' (otherwise nothing would make sense), all the background is delivered with some spin and flair, so you get plenty of ooh and ahh and woah! while the storyline and characters are explained. Another plus -- there's none of the 'oh why me?' whining and grizzling which has been really popular in superhero movies of late. Iron Man is all about a good guy / bad guy facedown, involving rockets and big guns and things that go boom. Overall, it's a corking action movie in its own right and Iron Man is a brilliant set-up for a sqeual. This film will look brilliant in Hi-Def with big sound, and a little less brilliant on a normal TV. (Oh, and if you love Iron Man then make sure you watch The Hulk 2008, too. Especially right near the end. Nuff said). Iron Man is that rare superhero movie: one which will give adults a great time and keep the kids happy with plenty of action and awesome visuals. It's not art, but it's huge fun. 8/10
TRULY EXCELLENT!!!!!! June 6, 2008 Ms. N. Canham (orpington, uk) 11 out of 17 found this review helpful
This is easily the best comic book adaptation I have seen. Robert Downey Jr was the best choice for Iron Man. This movie has it all action, humour and a great storyline. Robert has a great way of playing the playboy millionaire at the start of the film, but changes after his kidnapping and vows to protect innocent people using his suit with amazing powers. You have to see this film, You'll love it!!!!!!
Probably The Worst Film You'll Ever See... September 7, 2008 WCW Fan (Wales) 7 out of 32 found this review helpful
Despite not knowing too much about the background of "Iron Man", I had pretty high expectations for this film. Although I wasn't expecting a Batman/ Spider-Man-style epic, I was very disappointed with this pitiful attempt at a superhero film. The first problem is that Tony Stark (Downey Jr) just isn't likeable. He starts the film by wise-cracking in a warzone and he treats those around him with no respect. Therefore, when the accident happens in the desert and his journey to become "Iron Man" starts, you don't feel sorry for him in the slightest. As soon as he gets in the suit, the film becomes loud and pointlessly violent. The action scenes are boring and repetitive (once you've seen "Iron Man" shoot flames from his arms once, you've seen it a hundred times). The acting is also beyond awful. Gwyneth Paltrow is weak as Stark's assitant and becomes yet another character who he walks all over but still expects her help in return. The "twist" involving Jeff Bridges can been seen 10 mins into the film and the morals of the film appear to be all over the place. As the film continues, you find yourself almost revelling in the hilarity of it all (the acting, the action scenes, the unintentionally funny lines, scenes such as Iron Man getting a smile from a kid eating ice-cream on a ferris wheel). That's why I would almost recommend seeing this film at least once (on TV for free) just to see how bad it really is. However, if you fork out good money, then the joke's on you. This has to be the worst comic-book film ever, if not the worst film of all time. The action scenes may amuse young children with short attention spans, but anyone older looking for a well plotted, well-acted and well-executed superhero flick should avoid it or at least lower your expectations to basement level.

Casting robert downey jr as tony stark was genius, sure other actors could have made it work but RDJ makes it look easy. I was dubious when I heard Elf director and comedian John Favreau was doing Ironman, I need not have worried it is a fantastic movie that is only hampered by telling an origin story. The script is clever and witty the performances are all very good or excellent. The effects are top notch as well, in fact the film does everything well. Even my wife liked it.
