Amazon.co.uk Review
Twelve years after Die Hard with a Vengeance, the third and previous film in the Die Hard franchise, Die Hard 4.0 finds John McClane (Bruce Willis) a few years older, not any happier, and just as kick-ass as ever. Right after he has a fight with his college-age daughter (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), a call comes in to pick up a hacker (Justin Long, Dodgeball) who might help the FBI learn something about a brief security blip in their systems. Now any Die Hard fan knows that this is when the assassins with foreign accents and high-powered weaponry show up, telling McClane that once again he's stumbled into an assignment that's anything but routine. Once that wreckage has cleared, it is revealed that the hacker is only one of many hackers who are being targeted for extermination after they helped set up a "fire sale," a three-pronged cyberattack designed to bring down the entire country by crippling its transportation, finances, and utilities. That plan is now being put into action by a mysterious team (Timothy Olyphant, Deadwood, and Maggie Q, Mission: Impossible 3) that seems to be operating under the government's noses. Die Hard 4.0 uses some of the cat-and-mouse elements of Die Hard with a Vengeance along with some of the pick-'em-off-one-by-one elements of the now-classic original movie. And it's the most consistently enjoyable installment of the franchise since the original, with eye-popping stunts (directed by Len Wiseman of the Underworld franchise), good humour, and Willis's ability to toss off a quip while barely alive. Yippee-ki-ay! --David Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars "have you done that kinda stuff before?"   October 24, 2007

Twelve years after Die-hard with a vengeance Bruce Willis returns to the big screen as John McClane.
A breach of the computer firewall security at a government run installation throws the system into disarray determined to find the persons responsible they issue warrants for the arrest of all and any hackers with the technical know how to pull off the hack. However the hackers are just pawns for a group of cyber terrorists who orcastrated the whole operation and the terrorists are determined to get rid of any loose ends including hacker Matt (Justin long) oblivious to the terrorist plans, who McClane has been sent to pick up and take down to the station. Arriving at his apartment building the pair soon find themselves under siege and the action kicks off and doesn't stop as the pair race around the city in turmoil as the terrorists unleash another cyber attack crippling pretty much all electronic devices in the city.
It's one set piece after another. Whether it's driving a police car into a helicopter, a hand-to-hand fight in a car suspended in an elevator shaft, McClane going mano a mano with a henchmen or the finale of truck vs. fighter jet. The sequences are amazing and never fail to impress
It's the best action flick of the decade with some of the most exciting and tense fights and chases I've seen in a long time, Over the top they may be but there nothing short of superb.
Willis is on top form with one liners flying as fast as the bullets and he reminds us why John McClane is still such a likeable character, Long's character manages to avoid becoming an annoying sidekick as he proves to be more of a help than a hindrance and the two have a good rapport. Timothy Olyphant of TV's Deadwood plays a good villain he's not very hands on but oozes menace as a cold hearted ruthless but intelligent adversary.
The 4th is the series has been toned down a little (so it could get a lower age rating in America) there's only one F-word in there which is of course the famous line and the violence is a bit more subdued with less blood splatter but still remains edgy and brutal.
All in all one of if not the best flick of 07 considering the disappointing threequels that graced us earlier this year. McClane steps up to show them how it's done.
Simply put if you have to have to have a film on Blu-Ray this would be it, its dazzling and captivating rollacoaster of carnage and would look sensational in hi-defintion however the only downside to this is its the censored version. The uncut version of Die Hard 4 is bieng released on the 2 disc ultimate action DVD which at this time is only on DVD & not on Blu-Ray
Though that being said you're still in for a wild ride with Die Hard 4 regardless of which version you get so sit back and watch the carnage unfold. Yippee Kai Yay indeed

4 out of 5 stars Firmware update required for Samsung BDP-1000   October 31, 2007

4 stars for the movie, however if you own the above Blu Ray player expect to encounter playback problems. Due to Fox applying a new BD+ encryption to their recent releases, certain players (namely the above for the limited UK blu ray market) will struggle with playback resulting in picture stuttering and audio problems. Whilst firmware has been provided for the U.S contingent, Samsung have yet to supply the European fix for this very same issue. Hopefully a resolve will arrive shortly.

Well good film and on blu ray ABSOLUTLEY amazing. I havent watched any of the special features yet but the film itself is really good. If you enjoyed any of the other die hard then youll no doubt enjoy this but im sure like me youll be left feeling that theres something missing.
Oh its also worth mentioning that i never had any issues with this BD+ that the other reviewer mentioned. But i am playing it on a PS3 so that might be why.

Bruce is back and looking great. This for me is one of the best of the Die Hard series films and it looks absolutely stunning in HD. The story was modern, had plenty of twists and was action all the way. As one person pointed out the language was much cleaner. I was watching it on my playstation through a 32" Sony at 1080i and the quality is incredible.

The action scenes really do show of the quality of the HD image. It is actually getting almost too detailed when y ou can see individual pores on the actors faces (tough being a makeup artist). I would recommend this to any ps3 user who wants to see what a HD movie looks like or someone looking at starting their collection.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Package   December 14, 2007

I was sceptical before watching this movie given the hype and the controversy surrounding the certificate. However I was very surprised.

Len Wiseman does a great job at the direction and the performances all round are very good. The action is typical Die Hard and overall I would have to say it's the best since the first.

Slight complaint though that the Bluray is the theatrical release and not the unrated but apart from that I am impressed with the overall package.
