Amazon.co.uk Review
Twelve years after Die Hard with a Vengeance, the third and previous film in the Die Hard franchise, Die Hard 4.0 finds John McClane (Bruce Willis) a few years older, not any happier, and just as kick-ass as ever. Right after he has a fight with his college-age daughter (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), a call comes in to pick up a hacker (Justin Long, Dodgeball) who might help the FBI learn something about a brief security blip in their systems. Now any Die Hard fan knows that this is when the assassins with foreign accents and high-powered weaponry show up, telling McClane that once again he's stumbled into an assignment that's anything but routine. Once that wreckage has cleared, it is revealed that the hacker is only one of many hackers who are being targeted for extermination after they helped set up a "fire sale," a three-pronged cyberattack designed to bring down the entire country by crippling its transportation, finances, and utilities. That plan is now being put into action by a mysterious team (Timothy Olyphant, Deadwood, and Maggie Q, Mission: Impossible 3) that seems to be operating under the government's noses. Die Hard 4.0 uses some of the cat-and-mouse elements of Die Hard with a Vengeance along with some of the pick-'em-off-one-by-one elements of the now-classic original movie. And it's the most consistently enjoyable installment of the franchise since the original, with eye-popping stunts (directed by Len Wiseman of the Underworld franchise), good humour, and Willis's ability to toss off a quip while barely alive. Yippee-ki-ay! --David Horiuchi

4 out of 5 stars "Die Hard 4.0" or "Live Free or Die Hard" depending on where you live   September 9, 2007

This, as you have guessed, is the 4th Die Hard movie, coming about a decade after number 3.

Since we last saw John McClane the world has technologically grown up without him. He's an old school cop in a high tech world. The general plot is he is sent to pick up a 'hacker' who is wanted by some terrorists who also want to take over the US using solely technology as their weapon.

The film is 2 hours of action, almost non-stop. Yes you'll need to suspend belief, but it's a Die Hard movie, goes without saying. Personally I really enjoyed this movie and it's great to see Bruce Willis reprise John McClane. Best action movie I've seen this year, so far.

5 out of 5 stars A superb addition to the Die Hard series.   October 12, 2007

After an absence of 12 years, a lead actor who arguably has his best days behind him and a director who's first two films were dreadful, the question to ask about Die Hard 4.0 is how the hell did it all turn out so great?

When I heard Die Hard was coming back, I was excited. When I heard Len Wiseman was directing, I was distraught. His first two films (the Underworld ones) were two of the worst films of the horror/vampire genre I have ever seen. Slow, boring and entirely predictable. All excitement evaporated as I was expecting him to do the same to the Die Hard franchise. After having now seen the film all I can say is that Mr Wiseman should stick to the action/thriller genre as he has made one of the most enjoyable and exciting action films in recent memory.

Rather than kill of the franchise, Wiseman has totally re-invigorated it and there is every chance Die Hard 5 will not be far away. The set pieces are completely over the top but are filmed so well that you just get swept up in the whole thing. The balance between CGI and "real" action is perfect and maintains a more gritty and realistic look rather than some of the sugar coated action blockbusters. The story is also very good and holds the action together nicely.

Overall Die Hard 4 is much better than expected. It is the perfect popcorn movie. The story is easy to follow, the action is spectacular and the performance of Bruce Willis as John McClane is spot on. In short, brilliant.

3 out of 5 stars Original action sequences   January 6, 2008

This is the forth part of the series and has some very original, but hardly believable action shots.

The plot is interesting and the " threat " seems real and terrifying.
However most of the secondary characters are so wooden that beggars belief they were chosen for a blockbuster. That does not include a very good Justin Long , who plays the hacker McClane has to protect, and a great Kevin Smith (warlock).

The movie has very nice Star wars references , Fett , you are our only hope , etc.

Most of the action is very well shot and the sound effect are excellent.

Overall this is a worthy continuation of the series but a step back from Die hard 3 , the baddies are all wooden and the ending is weak.

Extras , mostly useless apart from extended warlock shot.

Twelve years after Die-hard with a vengeance Bruce Willis returns to the big screen as John McClane.
A breach of the computer firewall security at a government run installation throws the system into disarray determined to find the persons responsible they issue warrants for the arrest of all and any hackers with the technical know how to pull off the hack. However the hackers are just pawns for a group of cyber terrorists who orcastrated the whole operation and the terrorists are determined to get rid of any loose ends including hacker Matt (Justin long) oblivious to the terrorist plans, who McClane has been sent to pick up and take down to the station. Arriving at his apartment building the pair soon find themselves under siege and the action kicks off and doesn't stop as the pair race around the city in turmoil as the terrorists unleash another cyber attack crippling pretty much all electronic devices in the city.
It's one set piece after another. Whether it's driving a police car into a helicopter, a hand-to-hand fight in a car suspended in an elevator shaft, McClane going mano a mano with a henchmen or the finale of truck vs. fighter jet. The sequences are amazing and never fail to impress
It's the best action flick of the decade with some of the most exciting and tense fights and chases I've seen in a long time.
Willis is on top form with one liners flying as fast as the bullets and he reminds us why John McClane is still such a likeable character, Long's character manages to avoid becoming an annoying sidekick as he proves to be more of a help than a hindrance and the two have a good rapport. Olyphant of TV's Deadwood plays a good villain he's not very hands on but oozes menace as a cold hearted ruthless but intelligent adversary.
The 4th is the series has been toned down a little (so it could get a lower age rating in America) there's only one F-word in there which is of course the famous line and the violence is a bit more subdued with less blood splatter but still remains edgy and brutal.
All in all one of if not the best flick of 07 considering the disappointing threequels that graced us earlier this year. McClane steps up to show them how it's done and you're in for a wild ride with die hard 4 so sit back and watch the carnage unfold. Yippee Kai Yay indeed

4 out of 5 stars Good - but not great   October 4, 2007

I was pleased but apprehensive about seeing Bruce come back as J.M. However, I must admit that as a stand alone or part of the wider series I actually think its a pretty good action film, certainly one of the best of the year. It was fairly predictable (which you would expect) and you will have to forget realism (like all of the die hard films really!!) but it was non stop action, some slick lines and alot of fun. I think it was well worth the cinema admission and I will probably buy it at some point to sit alongside DH1-3. This version is the single disk so expect a two disc version either for xmas or next year. Therefore, I may hold out for the better proposition. Overall an enjoyable action movie which I would happily see again.
