A MATURE PERFORMANCE March 8, 2008 C. Kingswell When an order fom General Blackwell results in the massacre by Apaches of all the men at Fort Furnace Creek, a court martial is convened and the general unfortunately has a heart attack and dies on the witness stand. His two sons, one of whom is an army Captain ( played by Glenn Langan ), each head for the town of Furnace Creek to find out what really happened in an effort to clear their father's name. Victor Mature plays gambler Cash Blackwell, who gets there first and slowly uncovers a conspiracy. However, when his brother arrives his foolhardiness almost gets them both killed. This is a top notch western and could easily have been a Randolph Scott vehicle, but the very likeable Mature handles it just as well and turns in a first rate performance as usual. Look out for Jay Silverheels as the Apache leader. The final shootout is immensely satisfying. For enthusiasts, the music score is by David Raksin. The picture and sound quality is excellent, but I should point out that this movie was shot in black and white, not colour as stated on Amazon, nor is it in widescreen.
