Amazon.co.uk Review In his most effective thriller since Enemy of the State, Tony Scott makes time travel seem plausible. It helps that his New Orleans hero, ATF agent Doug Carlin (Denzel Washington in his third go-round with the director), spends more time in the present than the past. In order to catch a terrorist, FBI Agent Pryzwarra (Val Kilmer) invites Carlin to join forces. They have the technology to see the past. He has the expertise to interpret the data. Unfortunately, the bomb has already gone off and hundreds of ferry passengers have died. Then there's the body of a beautiful woman, Claire Kuchever (Paula Patton, Idlewild), that turns up in the vicinity of the blast. Evidence indicates she was killed beforehand. Since the FBI enables him to observe Claire prior to her murder, Carlin gets to know what she was like and finds himself falling in love. He becomes convinced that the only way to solve the case--and prove her innocence--is to travel to the past. But as Pryzwarra's colleague, Denny (Adam Goldberg), argues, "You cannot go back in time. It's physically impossible." Or so he says. Deja Vu is constructed around a clever script and executed by a top-notch cast, notably Washington, Patton, and an eerie Jim Caviezel (miles away from Passion of the Christ). In shedding the excesses of recent years--the sadism of Man on Fire and weirdness of Tarantino favorite Domino--Scott re-affirms his rep as one of the action movie's finest practitioners. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Haven't I seen this before? May 27, 2007 Amanda Richards (ECD, Guyana) 17 out of 26 found this review helpful
I thought I'd seen this one before but maybe I was wrong Time travel movies hurt my brain and this one's pretty long A bomber blasts a ferry boat Hundreds of people die In light of past atrocities this part may make you cry Denzel's quickly on the case He seems to know the score When the body of a girl turns up Who'd died hours before Here's where things start getting strange The Bureau's on the case They're into something really weird Involving time and space Four days, six hours in the past Like TiVo'ed television They see all, hear all and observe With super X-Ray vision Denzel thinks there's more to it and sure enough, he's right They're bending, folding, twisting time and working from hindsight At this point it gets stranger still they're tracking down a killer A car chase in two different times make this movie a thriller From here on it's predictable with lots of deja vu full of action, thrills and spills it's easy to sit through Denzel does his usual stuff Jim Caviezel's all that Val Kilmer can't be recognized under those layers of fat Patton looks like Halle B Goldberg plays a nerd Action fans will like this one although the plot's absurd Amanda Richards
Fast foward please April 26, 2007 Mr. J. Hulme (uk) 16 out of 25 found this review helpful
The only thing Deja vu about this film is Denzel Washington's acting, he is a bit like Hugh Grant. He plays the same role, himself all the time. Deep broody thoughtful modern man in touch with his feelings. Don't get me wrong I have enjoyed his films in the past. He has made some great ones. This is I am afraid a turkey. From it's a explosive start it rapidly goes down hill the more they try and put some 'truth' to the unbelievable plot. It is a cross between the Minority Report, the Harry Potter sequence where they save Hagrids Griffin type Creature and a very poor version of Twleve Monkeys. Around about the time these professors explain the far fetch hokum, sorry a kind of worm hole, bending time whatever. I was hoping to teleport myself into the future, where this film would be a distant fading memory. This is the view of a guy who has all his fingers, but has a scar over his left eye, due to a RTA. This is not gory.
could have been better June 24, 2007 M. O. HAYNES (UK) 15 out of 17 found this review helpful
First of all the good points - 1. Tony Scott's direction is brilliant - keeping the energy of the story rolling along at a good pace and cranking it up to edge of the seat stuff towards the end. 2. The acting is great - in particular that of Denzel Washington - I am begining to think that Denzel is one of the best actors in the world at present and the only thing he lacks is maybe a wide range of film genres under his belt. In every action film I have seen him in he has delivered a brilliant performance which really helps the viewer associate with the plight of the character. This film is no exception. 3. The story idea is cool - I am a sucker for time travel (big fan of 'Doctor Who' and 'Back to the Future'), this is more like a contemporary and gritty none kick-boxing version of 'Time Cop'. Now the bad points and there is only one and I've already mentioned it - 1. the story idea is cool - so why waste an opportunity? The writers could have done so much more with this, it could have been so much more complex and riddle-like and seemed to lack imagination. I felt very disappointed that the story line was very linear and predicatable. I was also very bemused at the scene where he shines the laserpen onto the screen and the woman whose past they are viewing sees it - there's far fetched and there's far fetched and this stretched even my incredulity to the limits. So that's why only 4 stars. If you liked 'Paycheck' or 'Twelve Monkeys', don't have a problem with time travel sci-fi and know how good Denzel is then I would recommend this to you.
original and thoroughly enjoyable! May 16, 2007 Mr. N. Wildman (Beds, UK) 12 out of 16 found this review helpful
Most people have seen a variety of time-travel films, most of which cover the same type of plot: some form of accident occurs, the main character finds a way to travel back in time to prevent it. Bing bang bosh. This film does have elements of this classic formula but it also introduces a whole new factor: trying to influence the past from the present. I won't say too much as I don't want to add any more spoilers to the ones that have already been posted but I will say that it has something more than most films of its kind. This is definitely one to turn your brain off for because if you try to get your head round it, especially if you have a scientific background like me, you will go mad! When it comes down to it, the feasibility of the concepts introduced in the story aren't important because it's science fiction!! FICTION being the operative word. I only didn't give this film 5 stars because in my opinion no film is perfect enough to deserve 5 stars but this one is close. Just sit back and enjoy one of the best time travel films since Back to the Future!
an old idea but a new twist July 1, 2007 E. Coxon (UK) 10 out of 17 found this review helpful
i saw this film at the cinema not knowing anything about it and i was just blown away with denzel, he always gives a brilliant performance and this film is no different. i will not tell you the plot as it would ruin the surprise, but the effects are great and the cast is perfect. the story does make sence just make sure you pay attension because the smallest thing could come into play later. it delievers a lot and is really worth a buy becuase you will watch it over and over and still think wow!.
