The most successful invigoration of a cinematic franchise since Batman Begins, Casino Royale offers a new Bond identity. Based on the Ian Fleming novel that introduced Agent 007 into a Cold War world, Casino Royale is the most brutal and viscerally exciting James Bond film since Sean Connery left Her Majesty's Secret Service. Meet the new Bond; not the same as the old Bond. Daniel Craig gives a galvanising performance as the freshly minted double-0 agent. Suave, yes, but also a "blunt instrument," reckless and possessed with an ego that compromises his judgment during his first mission to root out the mastermind behind an operation that funds international terrorists. In classic Bond film tradition, his global itinerary takes him to far-flung locales, including Uganda, Madagascar, the Bahamas (that's more like it) and Montenegro, where he is pitted against his nemesis in a poker game, with hundreds of millions in the pot. The stakes get even higher when Bond lets down his armour by falling in love with Vesper (Eva Green), the ravishing banker's representative fronting him the money. For longtime fans of the franchise, Casino Royale offers some retro kicks. Bond wins his iconic Aston Martin at the gaming table, and when a bartender asks if he wants his martini "shaken or stirred," he disdainfully replies, "Do I look like I give a damn?". There's no Moneypenny or "Q," but Dame Judi Dench is back as the exasperated M who, one senses, admires Bond's "bloody cheek." A Bond film is only as good as its villain, and Mads Mikkelsen as Le Chiffre, who weeps blood, is a sinister dandy. From its punishing violence and virtuoso action sequences to its romance, Casino Royale is a Bond film that, in the words of one character, 'makes you feel it', particularly during an excruciating torture sequence. Double-0s, Bond observes early on, "have a short life expectancy". But with Craig, there is new life in the old franchise yet, as well as genuine anticipation for the next one when, at last, the signature James Bond theme kicks in following the best last line ever in any Bond film. To quote Goldie Hawn in Private Benjamin, "now I know what I've been faking all these years". --Donald Liebenson

Great Movie, great format, but not as much improvment as you'd think July 6, 2007 Amazonian Native (Amazon Rainforest) 19 out of 29 found this review helpful
I won't review the actual movie here as there are ample reviews, let's just say its great. What I am reviewing is the blu ray version, there is no doubt about it, it is the best quality of any movie I have ever seen in my life, but guess what? I would say Hi Defintion is only about 5% better than regular DVD. That might surprise a lot of people, but the fact is, I have the regular version of this movie too and I compared them both together on a top notch Hi Def TV, and a PS3 and an upscaling regular DVD machine that also uses an HDMI cable and was set at the same reslution, because it's an up to date movie shot in 2006 the picture quality of the regular version is sensational anyway, now how can you top that? well when it's that good there's only so much more improvement you can make, and I'd say that improvment was 5% better, but that 5% does make it look fantastic, I too watched and marveled as I saw the individual hairs on the mongoose in the fight scene with the cobra, but when I put the regular dvd in, I could still see them! Truth is if you have an upscaling DVD player and an HDMI cable and a good TV, then there is no real reason to bother paying more or replacing old movies for the new format, there really isn't, don't believe all the hype, it's just a cash in to sell movies all over again to the public, even old movies made into Hi Def won't compare to the regular version of Casino Royale. When a lot of people see a huge difference it's usually because they have old DVD players using the composite scart socket on their TV connections, or shared scarts on the RGB scart socket which reduces quality noticeably, (incidentally this is why American's rave about HD because they don't have RGB Scart over there and all use composite and their DVD's look terrible in comparison), it's not surprising when you play an HD movie through an HDMI socket and at a higher resolution picture you see a big improvement, but don't be fooled, its not all down to the blu ray, save your money, buy the regular version of this film and upscale if your DVD player does that.

There's a reason why Sony gave 500,000 copies of this free with the PS3. Once you've seen Blu-Ray you realise you're not going to buy the DVD version of what you want if there is a Blu-Ray version. My mind was blown by the amazing definition, most noticeable in the beautiful computer-generated introduction. Blu-Ray is the real deal. And the film - well if you were silly enough not to go see this in the cinema - it's well worth getting. One of the best Bond films, Daniel Craig a revelation and a return to the true ethos of Bond. No silly gadgets, no ridiculous one-liners, just fantastic dialogue, intense drama and a suprising feeling of wanting to buy one of those all-in-one casino sets. If you've got a Blu-Ray player get this film. If you've not got a Blu-Ray player, get one!
Sony Rule May 5, 2007 D. A. Swallow (UK) 9 out of 19 found this review helpful
I was one of the lucky people who got casino royal on blue ray for free when i registerd my ps3. It is fantastic the picture and sound is phenomenal especially when you are watching it on a 46 inch sony bravia HD TV and sound system. Unfortunattly i got this dvd on release date in standard def and it does not comapare to blue ray. I also have seen microsoft's HD DVD system which is almost as good but blue ray tips it. So after all the money i spent on the Sony Bravia 46 inch HD TV,the Sony sound system and the playstation 3 console it is all paying off. Sony have never let me down and they will not let you down. If you have a HDTV get blue ray you will not regret it
a welcome departure from the cliche bond. April 28, 2007 Mr. Adam D. A. Murphy (u.k) 7 out of 9 found this review helpful
DANIEL CRAIG first off i want to say that david craig (bond) has been getting a hell of alot of bad press recently so i was somewhat judgemental of his acting and portrayal of bond throughout the film, however i can say that daniel craig did an absolutely fantastic job on this film, his acting and charisma is superb,i was dissapointed about not getting more films from the last actor (cant think of his name) but i cant wait for more bond films with daniel craig. THE CHARACTER BOND in casino royal bond isnt the typical cliche bond were used to (black suit, bow tie, martini, aston martin, silly gadgets) ive got nothing against the past bonds but its a refreshing change to the franchise, anyway its not a major change to the character or else it wouldnt be bond!.you will know what i mean when you see it. THE FILM the film is absolutely awsome,my hopes werent high as im not a fan of most modern action films i thought it would be the same old,but the film realy holds a charisma of its own.it had about 3 tense moments where i was realy holding onto my seat.the effects througout the film are stunning yet their still not the typical effects and explosions you see in modern action films,so yes this film realy stands out from the typical action films of today,it has a style of its own and i highly recomend you watch it. COMPLAINTS it happens in every bond film but i got fed up of seeing "sony" on practicaly every gadget in the film,i know their promoting their products but it got a little too obvious sometimes. the "bond girl" meh the film started off ridiculously (im talking about chasing the black guy),i know bond isnt exactly realistic but they laid it on a bit thick in the beginning with bond dodging thousands of bullets becouse nobody can hit him for some reason. SUMMARY i realy would recomend you buy this film, especially the blu ray version becouse the 1920x1080p resolution and uncompressed audio looks and sounds stunning.oh yeah and the film aint half bad either... :)
High Intensity in High Definition June 26, 2007 CityBoy (London) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
What is probably the best James Bond film is a fantastic introduction to the amazing quality of the Blu Ray High-Definition system. Its almost worth splashing out on a player and HD screen for this movie alone. The quality is truly stunning - you can even see the individual hairs on the mongoose in the fight scene with the cobra. Every shot is a joy, every close up revealing and, with uncompressed audio, the chase scene at the beginning and the collapsing building at the end made my living room move beneath me. In terms of the acting, I think Daniel Craig is the best Bond and Mads Mikkelsen is the perfect villian as Le Chiffre. In case you haven't realised, I liked the film and loved the Blu Ray technology !
