This film starts well and has its moments but after half an hour or so it seems rather rushed, disjointed in places, and repetitive (get the gold ... shoot the baddies ... guard the gold ... shoot the baddies ... doublecross each other ... shoot the baddies ... shoot each other).

Yul Brynner gives a fairly decent performance as Sabata (in his exotic, stand-offish way), but for me he's not quite as memorable in the role as Lee Van Cleef.

The body count is very high in this movie, but it's cartoon violence with little or no gravitas to it. The music is also very Clint Eastwoodesque and rather blatantly so (even with whistling and music boxes etc), and the bad guys are, most unusually for a Western, Austrian army imperialists.

Overall, one for the genre purists and the Yul Brynner fans, but otherwise probably best left alone.
