Amazon.co.uk Review The latest remake of Burt Reynold's 1974 flick, Adam Sandler's take on The Longest Yard, is unlikely to win him many new fans. But it has merits as a good, solid, enjoyable comedy, and it finds Sandler himself in very strong form. The plot sets him as an ex-American footballer, who is sent to prison following a car accident. There, he finds himself putting together a team of convicts to face off against the prison guards, an opportunity that many of the prisoners simply don't want to pass up. And that pretty much sets the stage for a fast-paced, frequently-funny comedy that doesn't eclipse the original by any means, but is a worthy testament to it. Its main strength is its cast. Alongside Sandler himself are a collection of names from the American Football scene, but British audiences are more likely to warm to Chris Rock. He pretty much steals good chunks of the movie from under Sandler's nose, and some of the film's finest moments are down to him. Granted, The Longest Yard hardly sets new ground for comedies, and neither is it the finest laugh-fest of the last few years. But it is fun, it is funny, and for Adam Sandler and Chris Rock fans in particular, it's a fine way to spend a couple of hours. Worth a spin.--Simon Brew

Disregard that last review. December 17, 2005 18 out of 25 found this review helpful
The last review is full of unfounded bitterness based around general ignorance. I've not actually seen this latest Sandler vehicle, but i know for a fact that it is not just "a shameless rip-off" of a British classic. Contrary to what many morons believe, "Mean Machine" starring the oh so wonderful acting talents of Vinnie Jones is not a bastion of gritty British film-making but is in itself a remake of a Burt Reynolds film. Think before you open your mouth, clown!
No Prison Blues April 19, 2006 W. Lloyd (Wales,uk) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
An all star cast along with Sandlers usual crew helped make our night fun, plenty of laughs and a few sad bits. Well worth the money paid buying a copy
Hilarious!!! September 17, 2006 P. Krajcar (Europe) 7 out of 10 found this review helpful
Movie is great! I smiled for the whole movie thestory is good the cast is excellent and the movie is over before you know it. It won't win any oscars but it is the kind of movie that keeps you entertained.
Definitely worth watching February 15, 2006 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I have never seen the original or Mean Machines, but unlike some of the other reviews I am not going to dwell on it ;-)I saw this film at the cinema and it definitely exceeded my expectations. It is funny from the outset when our main character, an ex-American Football player (played by Sandler) gets drunk, locks his girlfriend in a closet and takes a spin in her flashy car. He ends up in a Texan prison and the warden, who pulled a few strings to get him there, is keen for help coaching his own team. Before he knows it Sandler is recruitng and training a team of cons to play against the warden's team of prison guards - the idea being that it will be a morale booster for the guards when they win. But of course it doesn't turn out to be the walk in the park that they expected... The big game is the climax of the film and has some really good moments especially when various prisoners decide to run off in the wrong direction and take out certain guards instead of actually going for the ball. Some of the game tactics are pretty halarious too. The plot goes into more detail than I have but is still quite predictable but that's what you want from an easy going film like this. A good film. Definitely worth watching.
yet another rip-off of a british film November 1, 2005 4 out of 53 found this review helpful
Hollywood yets again is messing with classic british films in countless remakes, from the italian job to this latest film.I went to watch this film at the cinema purely on the fact that it had Adam Sandler in it, he does bring a comical element to this film which is entirly based on the british film "Mean Machine" which concentrates on the emotion of football whereas this seems to be a rip-off of it with the script copied WORD FOR WORD other than the occasional scene such as one involving Adam Sandler getting "personal" with a VERY unattractive old lady secrectary to get access to some documents. whereas in the original "Mean Machine" it features Vinnie Jones with an attractive young woman secretary. All in all this film is just a cheap knock-off of a classic british film drama being turned into an american half-arsed comedy!
