Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.co.uk Review
Dances with Wolves is the film that sent director-producer-actor Kevin Costner on his hubristic way; yet it is such a resonant and powerful film that we can almost forgive him for inflicting upon us his later "epic" The Postman. Here Costner plays a Union solder stationed at the far edges of the West, and left there to rot at his post. He finally sees the wisdom of the Lakota Sioux and finds peace within their community. But his decision to "go native" is greatly frowned upon by his military commanders, and the subsequent culture clash forms the backbone of the narrative. The story is told simply, and wastes not one word of dialogue, while the South Dakota locations provide a magnificent backdrop. Costner is sympathetic and accessible as an American Everyman who awakens to himself and the world around him... --Rochelle O'Gorman, Amazon.com

I agree with all the reviews of this movie but beware the version Amazon.co.uk is selling is not the full length epic. Its the 173 minute version. Still a wonderful movie but would have been nice to have had the full 237 minute version on DVD.

1 out of 5 stars Good film, bad DVD   October 9, 2003

We got this DVD because it was a favourite film, but the DVD has a glaring omission - the subtitles!
You can't tell what the indians are saying unless you turn the English subtitles on - but then you also have to put up with the text appearing for the English words and other stuff like '(Horse neighs)'. Which is a bit irritating.

5 out of 5 stars The normally dull Costner stars in a near flawless classic.   November 7, 2001

I have not admired Kevin Costner in any of his other films. I saw this one relatively late (11 years later!). The attention to detail of this unorthodox "western" makes it a modern classic. Costner carries his role perfectly. The great scenery of the American plains co-stars throughout. John Barry's score is a masterpiece in itself. Both Dolby 5.1 and DTS soundtracks are good but I found myself leaning towards the DTS as always. This DVD is worth purchasing because it is timeless and will enchant again and again. I have no hesitation in giving such an epic five stars.

Well, i never saw this film until this 3 Disc Special Edition came out. After all the hype and great reviews, i just had to see what everyone was talking about. Well now i see. Since this film is quite similar to the recent The Last Samurai starring Tom Cruise (which used to be one of my favourite films), Dances with Wolves is far superior. The acting is spot on from both Kevin Costner and the Indian actors. The visual photography and script are also great. In addition, considering this film is almost 4 hours long, for those who havent yet had the chance to watch it will be surprised by how gripping this is. As for those who have seen it before, you'll notice that this is the previously unseen extended edition of the movie split on two discs. Thus, even if you have a copy already, this is the Ultimate edition so far. Plus you get another whole disc with extras including a 70+ minute documentary on the making of the movie. Buy this while it lasts!

I saw the original screenplay and was awed. I bought the original VHS and was gratified! I then bought the extended version and was completely overcome! WOW! The extra time explained away the confusing omissions from the original.
The extended version is, therefore, an absolute MUST!
Regretably, while I had the extended VHS I cannot seem to find this on Region 2 DVD. This is a travesty for me!
