5 out of 5 stars A brilliant film!!   August 3, 2003

Having read the manga (book) of Rayearth a couple of weeks ago, I was hooked! When I came across this anime version of Rayearth, I was impressed. There are three volumes included on this DVD, when watched all together they seem like a film.
The story itself is self-explanatory so it is not necessary to have read/watched Rayearth before. However, it is useful to know something about it, as the plot can get quite confusing.
For people who have read it before, the story and plot differs from the book, it is set in an alternate reality, where some characters who were good are evil, and vice versa. So even having read the books, the story was still interesting for me.
However there is a lot more violence than in the manga, with a deeper/darker side to it. This means that the DVD is probably not suitable for young children, it also has a rating of 15.
The animation is very good, and I enjoyed watching it. I was also glad that unlike some anime the audio was English dubbed, so I could totally immerse myself in the story.
The 'film' is divided up into 24 sections, like chapters. There are no special features apart from some previews of other anime films available.
I really enjoyed this film and I would recommend this video to anyone who enjoys fantasy, and anyone who has watched programs such as Sailor moon, Gundam Wing etc and enjoyed them.

4 out of 5 stars Not bad for a English version   February 2, 2004

I love watching anime and this English anime version did not put me down. The music and sound quality is the same as the Japanese version which makes it great and another good thing about this DVD is the fact they never cut or edit any scenes out like they did with the English versions of Cardcaptor Sakura, Sailor Moon, Pokemon etc......
I have read the whole series of the "Magic Knight Rayearth" manga before I watched this DVD and the story on the DVD is totally different from the manga. Either way I prefer the manga because it is easiar to understand the story and it has lot's of interesting plots which makes you want to read on.
The DVD features 3 full episodes about 3 girls called Hikaru, Umi and Fuu who is just about to graduate, therefore they are never going to see each other again and go their seperate ways. They made a wish under the Cherry tree to stay together. At that moment Cephiro's castle broke into the world and the 3 girls where chosen by Mokona to save the world.
Well with this DVD I can prove to my friends that Magic Knight Rayearth and other Animes are not for kids as this DVD features bad language, nudity etc...... it is even classified 15. Well it is a must have for all CLAMP and Magic knight Rayearth fans.... you'll be saying why didn't I got this DVD earlier!
and what are you waiting for its a bargin!

The difference between this DVD and the region 2 DVD is that this one contains Japanese audio and English subtitles too. In my opinion I think it's worth hunting out a copy and buying this one instead.

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent. What anime should be like.   December 17, 2003

After watching, and being severely displeased by Legend of the Overfiend, my love of anime was dwindling. Thank God that this was the next one I watched because it has restored my faith in the fact that, actually, there are some damn good anime films out there!

Rayearth kept me gripped from start to finish. OK, so perhaps it won't win many awards for originality, it's all very much cliche. Tokyo is destroyed, three girls must fight evil to save the earth and are given super powers with which to do so. Great. But where this film shines is... well... every other thing about it! The animation is excellent (even though I think I detected a slight wobble in some frames... maybe it was my DVD player or something). The music is catchy. The scripting is remarkably well done. Everything about this film screams QUALITY at you. And then it's over and you're left crying out for more.

Go buy this DVD now. You won't be disappointed!

Great animation, great characters, great storyline, blah, blah, blah...
There's only one gripe I have about this DVD. How come we only have the English language version, but the region 1 release has the Japanese audio too?
This DVD is so weak with the English voice-acting, and to really appreciate this short anime series you absolutely NEED to watch it in Japanese.
